Academic English
General Infromation About Academic English:
This course is intended for those with at least a lower intermediate level of English (minimum 500 TOEFL or 5.0 IELTS). Its aim is to prepare students to meet the academic and cultural requirements of an English-speaking university. The focus is equally divided among the four major skill areas, which are integrated through work on field-related tasks. It is expected that by the end of the course, participants will have a firm grasp of the standards expected of them at an overseas university. They should then be ready to attend the PROFESSIONAL TRAINING GROUP’s TOEFL or IELTS preparation course.

Topics Include:
- Education
- The environment
- Health and medicine
- Technology
- Economics
Objectives Include:
- Describing data and statistics, describing a process
- Comparing and contrasting differing points of view
- Making notes from lectures and articles
- Distinguishing fact from opinion and recognizing degrees of certainty
- Summarizing and synthesizing information from several sources
Tasks Include:
- Giving a 15-minute presentation, followed by a 5-page write-up, on a graph, table, or chart
- Giving a 15-minute presentation, followed by a 5-page write-up, on a field-related problem and its possible solutions
- Reviewing a book or journal article
- Conducting a survey and reporting the findings
